Every year, when the first cold days come, I start making snowflakes. For me, nothing says winter like a quilled snowflake hanging on the tree, white and light, catching the glow of the fairy lights. These ornaments are one of my favorite paper quilling projects of the season, and they are also very good paper craft ideas if you want to decorate your home in a handmade way.

Each snowflake is made from thin white quilling paper strips. I roll them into marquise coils, shape small branched tips and add tiny tight scrolls in between. It takes patience, and sometimes one arm of the snowflake does not come out perfect and I must start again, but this is also the charm of quilled art. The pattern is always symmetrical, and I like how clean and geometric these quilling designs look when they are finished.
My favorite way to show them is on natural raffia with warm, twinkling lights behind. The white paper against the soft brown makes a simple, cozy picture, and the shapes seem to shine a little. If you want to try, a basic slotted tool, some paper strips, and glue are enough to begin. These quilling projects also make lovely gifts, or you can use them on a quilling window display for the holidays.
