How to Make Tight Paper Quilling Flowers – Step-by-Step Tutorial

These dimensional paper quilling flowers are made from several small drop-shaped quilling elements assembled into structured petals. The contrasting strips added to each drop create a subtle ray-like pattern in the center of the flower, while the double paper border gives each petal a dense, dimensional appearance.

This tutorial shows how to make one petal step by step and then combine five petals into a complete handmade quilling flower. I used light pink and dark pink paper, but you can experiment with different color combinations to create your own version.

Materials

For one flower, you will need:

  • 25–27 light pink quilling paper strips, 15 cm long and 2 mm wide
  • Dark pink quilling paper strips, 2 mm wide, cut into small pieces
  • PVA or other water-based paper glue
  • Tweezers with an extra-fine tip
  • Quilling tool or toothpick
  • Quilling circle template with 5–6 mm circles
  • Scissors (I recommend KAI scissors - the most precise and sharp ones I ever had)
  • A small pearl, half-pearl, or another embellishment for the flower center

    ________

Step 1: Make the Basic Loose Coil

Take one 15 cm × 2 mm light pink paper strip and roll it into a loose coil.

Place the coil into a circle on your quilling template and allow it to expand evenly. Glue the end of the strip to secure the coil.

For the petals in this tutorial, you will need coils in two sizes: approximately 6 mm and 5 mm in diameter.

Step 2: Shape the Coil into a Drop

Hold the center of the loose coil with tweezers and gently squeeze the paper along one side to create a pointed drop shape.

The result should have one rounded side and one pointed end. Try to make the drops as similar in size and shape as possible because they will be assembled into one petal.

Step 3: Prepare the Five Drops for One Petal

Each petal is made from five drop-shaped elements:

  • three drops made from approximately 6 mm coils
  • two smaller drops made from approximately 5 mm coils

You can also prepare small pieces of a contrasting color to create a decorative ray-like effect inside the finished petal. I used dark pink paper pieces approximately 3–5 mm long.

Step 4: Add the Contrasting Paper Details

Glue a small piece of the dark pink paper strip to both sides of each drop.

These small contrasting strips create a decorative pattern that radiates toward the center of the finished flower. You can use one contrasting color or experiment with two or three colors for a different effect.

Step 5: Assemble the Petal

Arrange the five decorated drops together and glue them at their bases.

Once the glue has started to hold, gently press the upper part of the arrangement to bring the drops together and create the basic shape of the petal.

Work carefully at this stage so the individual drops remain visible and evenly arranged.

Step 6: Wrap the Petal

Take another light pink paper strip and wrap it around the entire assembled petal.

For a stronger and more stable construction, wrap the petal twice. Glue the end of the strip securely.

The outer wrapping also creates the smooth border that holds all five drop-shaped elements together.

Step 7: Shape the Finished Petal

Hold the bottom of the petal firmly with tweezers or your fingers.

Then gently press the upper part of the petal to make it more compact. This helps close unwanted gaps between the individual drops and gives the petal its characteristic tight, dimensional shape.

Do not press too hard. The goal is to bring the elements together while keeping the layered structure visible.

Step 8: Make Five Petals

Repeat Steps 1–7 until you have five matching petals.

Glue the five petals together around their bases to create a complete quilling flower. Hold the arrangement until the glue has set.

For the center, you can add a small half-pearl, pearl, rhinestone, or another decorative embellishment.

Finished Paper Quilling Flower

Your finished flower has five structured petals made from layered drop-shaped quilling elements. The darker paper details create a subtle pattern radiating from the center, while the double-wrapped edges give the flower a compact, dimensional appearance.

Although I used light and dark pink paper, this technique can be adapted to many color combinations. Try combining contrasting shades, using several colors inside the petals, or adding a different center embellishment.

These handmade quilling flowers can be used to decorate greeting cards, wedding cards, scrapbook projects, gift boxes, paper wall art, and other paper craft projects.

The same basic petal construction can also be adapted by changing the size of the coils or the number of drop elements used in each petal.
