Learn how to make a beautiful 3D paper quilling flower using crimped paper strips. This simple technique creates textured petals with an interesting layered effect.
The flower is made from loose quilling coils shaped into teardrops, combined into five petals and finished with a darker crimped-paper border.
What You Need
- Paper crimper
- Tweezers
- Scissors
- Slotted quilling tool
- PVA glue
- 1.5 mm quilling paper strips
- Light yellow and dark yellow paper strips
- 80 gsm paper
- Paper strips approximately 297 mm long
For one flower, you will need:
- 15 light-yellow strips
- 3–4 dark-yellow strips
Step 1 – Crimp the Paper Strips
Start by preparing the paper strips with a paper crimper.
For one flower, prepare 15 light-yellow crimped strips and 3–4 dark-yellow crimped strips.
If you do not have a paper crimper, you can use another paper-crimping method instead.
Step 2 – Make Loose Quilling Coils
Take three light-yellow crimped strips and roll each one into a loose coil.
Glue the end of each strip so the coils do not unwind.
Each flower petal will be made from three of these coils.
Step 3 – Shape the Teardrops
Turn each loose coil into a teardrop shape.
To do this, gently hold one side of the coil and pinch the opposite side until a pointed end is formed.
You now have three teardrop shapes for one petal.
Glue the three teardrops together to form the main shape of the petal.
For an extra decorative effect, place short pieces of dark-yellow crimped paper between the teardrops.
Apply glue carefully with a pin, needle or toothpick so you do not leave visible glue marks on the paper.
Step 4 – Add the Petal Border
Take a dark-yellow crimped strip and wrap it around the outside of the assembled petal.
Wind the strip around the petal two or three times to create a stronger edge and a more pronounced decorative effect.
Add small amounts of glue as you wrap to keep the layers securely in place.
At the end, gently pinch the base of the petal to refine its shape.
Step 5 – Make Five Petals
Repeat the process until you have five petals.
For a more pointed and slightly exotic-looking flower, gently pinch the tip of each petal.
You can also leave the petals rounded for a softer flower shape.
Step 6 – Assemble the Flower
Arrange the five petals around the centre and glue them together.
Add a quilled centre to complete the flower.
Your 3D crimped paper quilling flower is now ready to use.
Step 7 – Use Your Quilled Flowers
These flowers can be used to decorate a variety of paper crafts, including:
- Handmade greeting cards
- Scrapbook layouts
- Photo frames
- Paper decorations
- Other 3D quilling projects
The flowers can also be made in different colours and with different combinations of crimped paper strips to create your own variations.
Tips for Crimped Paper Quilling
- Keep the coils loose so they are easy to shape into teardrops.
- Use two shades of the same colour for more dimension.
- Apply glue sparingly with a pin or needle.
- Wrap the darker strip evenly around the petal to create a clean border.
- Try different petal shapes to change the character of the finished flower.

Witaj Kasiu!!! No proszę, właśnie tę kartkę kupiłam u Ciebie na Święcie Papieru. Akurat w tym przypadku urzekł mnie motylek i te maleńkie listeczki.
