I bet right now, crafters around the world have already started preparing for the Christmas season. Craft rooms are filling with paper, ribbons, and all sorts of festive decorations, and new Christmas card ideas are appearing everywhere. I always enjoy seeing what people create at this time of year. Today, I’m sharing my own take on a classic Christmas flower: a poinsettia made with paper quilling.
For this quilled poinsettia, I used a quilling comb to shape the red petals and green leaves. Each petal is made from two quilled elements, joined together to create a fuller shape. You can use regular paper strips, but I especially like the effect of crimped strips. Their little waves give the petals a delicate, almost lace-like texture and add extra dimension. Small yellow quilled coils form the centre and complete this festive design.
There are plenty of ways to use a 3D quilling flower like this. It looks lovely on handmade Christmas cards and gift tags, but you can also turn it into a Christmas tree ornament or use it to decorate a candle or a festive napkin holder. Combined with natural jute string and a fresh pine branch, the poinsettia makes a simple but eye-catching Christmas decoration.
If you’re looking for Christmas paper quilling ideas, this flower is a lovely project to try. It’s also a good opportunity to practise comb quilling and experiment with crimped paper strips. You can use the finished flower on its own or make several to create your own festive arrangement.
I hope this quilled poinsettia inspires you to try something new for your Christmas decorations.
